Play ball!

Today's a great day.

Take me out to the ball game
Take me out to the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks
I don't care if I ever get back,
'Cause it's root, root, root
For the home team.
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes
You're out
At the old ball game.

Never thought of it that way...

Jesus loves you!
Then again, he loves everybody.

It was a Good Friday

(It’s taken me a few days to get this up.)

Last Friday, Shannon and I spent the day together in Savannah. It was her spring break and we decided an all-day-date would be a good idea. I checked into one of the downtown trolley tours. We rode around and saw some of the historic sites and heard stories of the homes and monuments and old businesses. We toured the Davenport house. We walked through the squares. The weather was great; sunshiny with a little breeze. We even sat around to enjoy bit of ice cream

I’ve got to just tell folks that my wife is awesome. I’d tried to work it out for us to eat at Lady and Sons, but were a little later than I thought we’d be getting there to put our name in for lunch. The line was already down to the corner of the block, and rather than wait in that line, or try to get buffet to go for a ‘picnic’ lunch, Shannon says, “How about we just eat at Wild Wing?” So, we split a plate of wings at Wild Wing Cafe and watched some of the NCAA tournament. And she thought it was as great as I did! Go ahead, be jealous…

Got video?

Quite possibly the best commercial ever for a Canadian video company...

Sometimes not doing something is better than doing it, especially if it's not going to be done well. If they wanted publicity, they got it. I mean, I'm telling you about it. But publicity doesn't pay the bills. People paying them to make videos does, and I wonder if this makes people want to pay them to make a video. I wonder if this 'publicity' translates into what they're really about, selling movies.

The Church is often good at publicity, at getting noticed. Sometimes it's not for the right things or in favorable ways. But does this publicity just create a perception of 'the Church' and 'Christians' and 'God' in a person's mind and never kick-over into that person hearing and receiving the message of the Gospel? Does this 'publicity' translate into what the Church is really about?

Sriracha

I like spicy foods. I'm a fan of hot sauce. At Taco Bell, give me the fire. Put Texas Pete on my fried chicken, please. At Zaxby's I do go with the tongue torched, which I'll admit is a little soft, but you get the picture. As I was explaining to a friend, "I want to feel it when I eat." Not that I should be in pain and can't breathe, but if it makes my forehead sweat a little, and makes my eyes water some, it's probably a good thing.

Well, I recently picked up some Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce at the grocery store on a whim. Never had it before. I can't read but about four words off the bottle, but I'm liking it. It certainly has kick! And, as they say on the company's website, although originally to spice up Asian dishes, it's good on lots of stuff. I had it in my rice earlier this week. Today I put it all over my burritos for lunch. (Shannon walked by me while I was eating and said, "Ugh... I can smell it. It just smells hot!") Anyway, if you like hot sauce, and see this where you shop, give it a try. And let me know if you like it, too.

I just don't know how to pronounce it?!?

Not resume material

Watch it sucker... I'm a bad man.

29

I think it was that I "feel morally comfortable picking up a child and using him/her as a weapon to throw at other children" that put me over the top.

Human Tetris

Oh! The potential for youth group games if we would only learn from Japanese television...

If we could get some of those silver body suits, I'm sure we'd be on the right track.

You make me happy when skies are grey...

Noah's had a rough week.

We had our first trip to the ER on Monday, and he's recovering well. But while he was at preschool Wednesday, he got bit three times, twice on the face and once on the hand, by one of the little girls in his class. Then, Thursday, she bit him again, once on the other side of his face, this time breaking the skin. And last night we noticed that he's cutting his third tooth - a top one this time!

At least he got to spend time with his grandpa today. He's liked that. Grandpa doesn't bite.

First Trip to ER

We had our first 'bloody' accident with Noah Monday night. It wasn't anything major, but it was the first semi-serious accident. He's had bumps and bruises and little scrapes here and there. We're not negligent or abusive parents; he's just an adventurous and active little boy. He's eight months and thinks he can take off walking.

Well, Monday night I was in the kitchen while Shannon was sitting on the floor in the bedroom playing with Noah. I heard a bump and Noah started screaming. Shannon yelled for me, and when I ran in there she was picking him up off the floor and his mouth was bleeding. He had been toddling around and tripped into the corner of the cedar chest. His mouth hit right on the corner.

We got the bleeding stopped with a paper towel and an ice cube. Once he calmed down and we could take a look at his mouth, we could tell he busted his lip. Really, his lip was ok, and if it had just been his lip, we wouldn't have done anything else. But we could see that when he fell, he cut his gum. It was a little gash across the top right side of his gum. It didn't look bad enough to need stitches, but I'm not a medical person. So we headed to the ER.

We got there about eight and ended up walking out at ten forty-five. Most of the time was sitting in the waiting room. Noah slept for a while, woke up for a while, cried some, slept some more, woke up and cried some more... He was definitely off his schedule and acting just as aggravated about being there as I was feeling. When someone finally did take a look at him we found out two things. One, it didn't need stitches, so they weren't going to do anything for the cut. Two, if there was any damage to the teeth, we'd have to wait for them to come in to be able to tell.

It was a little frustrating to sit there and wrestle with him in a crowded ER waiting room for so long for so little new input. But we wanted to make sure he was ok and to have somebody with a hospital name-tag say he's alright carries a little more weight than my guess.

I hope there aren't too many of these kinds of emergency trips, but I have that feeling this won't be our only one. This is one of those parts of parenting that hurts.

Our big pile of yellow pudding...

Back from Confirmation Retreat 08. It was a very good, very long, and very tiring weekend. I was super excited for our youth that got to participate this weekend and hope they come away from the experience having learned a little something, made some great memories, and having taken some steps in their faith. I hope to put together a short little video from the weekend sometime soon.

One quick story. SatPM we had what we called "Late Night Fun" which was basically just some games and activities for the youth. One of our boys was a volunteer for one of the games, and was instructed to bring an adult/counselor to the stage with him. With four pairs on stage, they came out with four foot-and-a-half by foot-and-a-half squares of plexi-glass. In the middle of the square on one side chocolate pudding was smeared in a little circle, vanilla pudding on the other. The partners each got one side. The contest: which pair could lick the most pudding off of their square the fastest. GO!

So, we start licking opposite sides of this pudding square. You've got the glass between you, but when you start to dive in to take a lick, and see a seventh grade boy's tongue where you're putting your, it's an odd feeling man. Odd feeling!

We came in a close second.
